Next generation DNA sequencing has recently emerged as a cost-effective and convenient approach for answering many biological questions. In clinical microbiology, DNA sequencing can be used for the identification of bacterial species, antibiotics resistant genes, virulence markers, serotypes and genotypes. The cost of sequencing a microbial genome is rapidly decreasing and equipment needed for microbial whole genome sequencing is becoming affordable for most hospitals. Since NGS will soon be part of the routine clinical microbiology, healthcare staff especially microbiologists, infection control practitioners and infectious diseases specialists need to be familiar with applications of this rapidly evolving technology and should be aware of at least the basic bioinformatics tools for NGS data analysis<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
